Introducing Chickasha Chiropractor Dr. James Monk
"Doctor after doctor told me it was all in my head."
I was a senior at the University of Iowa when I began experiencing severe digestive track problems. I couldn't keep any food down and had lost over 40 pounds from a trim weight. Since I worked part time at the University of Iowa Hospital's Biochem-Hematology lab, I consulted with our head pathologist about my health issues. He referred me to a gastroenterologist who performed an upper GI examination and concluded that I had gastritis and was pre-ulcerative. He prescribed medicine for the gastritis.
By coincidence or perhaps divine intervention, a friend from my hometown stopped in to see me on his way back to Palmer Chiropractic College. He commented on my dramatic weight loss and asked if I'd ever been to a chiropractor. I told him that I was clueless about chiropractic and he then explained that the nerve supply that goes to the stomach comes from the upper back and when he touched my spine it was extremely tender. He went on to explain that if you don't have proper nerve supply, you can't have proper function and that a chiropractic adjustment can help restore proper nerve supply and therefore restore proper function.
Since my grandfather and two uncles had died of stomach cancer, I willingly accompanied him to Palmer College for a thorough examination and x-rays. The tests revealed that I had a curvature in my upper back and after two weeks of spinal adjustments all of my gastrointestinal problems went away. In fact, I felt the best I'd ever felt and after I graduated from Iowa in May, I started chiropractic college in July. I have never regretted that decision.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa and my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa. I continue my education by attending classes in Applied Kinesiology, Applied Neurology, Cold Laser Therapy, Acupuncture and The Kaufman Technique.
Our practice philosophy is that every patient that comes to us deserves a thorough case history and examination to ascertain the underlying cause of their symptoms. This means infants to senior citizens. This serves two purposes, one it helps us find the cause and two, it helps us determine if Chiropractic care could be beneficial or if the patient would be better served by another health care discipline.
Having been in practice over 30 years, I feel doing what is best for each patient is our solemn obligation. Therefore, we routinely refer patients for medical consultations for both things outside the scope of our practice and to assist patients who need both chiropractic and medical care to achieve their health goals.
My wife of 30 years and I have been blessed with four children. Our oldest, Matt Bray, was on a high school state championship team. He later served in the Army in the Mountain Rangers. He is currently a police officer in upstate New York where he lives with his wife Jennifer and two daughters Savannah and Lily.
Josh received his B.S. from the University of Oklahoma and his MBA from Oklahoma City University. In school he was very active in sports and in 1990 was on our soccer team that won a silver medal in indoor and outdoor soccer. He won a National Championship in keyhole racing in 1992 with the National Appaloosa Horse Association. He currently works for Citibank in Washington, D.C.
Sarah is our adopted Korean daughter who is a senior at Norman North High School. She has played varsity tennis for 3 years and has also competed with Appaloosa and Paint horses.
Christian is in the 8th grade and is currently being home schooled. Although she has played soccer and softball, she now dedicates her time to Tae Kwon Do, pottery classes and growing a great garden.
My wife Karen, has her teaching degree and is currently working for the Cleveland County District Attorney's Office as a victim's advocate. I coached soccer for several years and currently serve on the board of our local women's center. Our office is very active in fund raising for numerous national and local charities.
I try to follow my own advice. I take many nutritional supplements, eat organic food whenever possible, try to exercise regularly and receive regular chiropractic adjustments.
