Chiropractor in Chickasha : Dr. James Monk

"Doctor after doctor told me it was all in my head."

In 1973, I was a senior at the University of Iowa when I began having severe abdominal pain, reflux and vomiting which led to an unhealthy weight loss. I worked in the bio-chemhematology lab part-time at the University of Iowa Hospital when an internist there recommended that I get an upper GI exam. Monk Chiropractic Clinic : Dr. James MonkHis diagnoses was pre-ulcerative gastritis which particular concerned me because I’d lost two relatives to stomach cancer.

By coincidence or perhaps Divine Intervention, a friend, who was in chiropractic school stopped to visit me and was alarmed at how bad I looked after weeks of not being able to eat without getting sick. He explained to me that the nerve supply to my stomach was in my upper back and when he touched that area it was very tender.

I accompanied him to the Palmer College where x-rays revealed that I had a curvature in my upper back. I began receiving spinal adjustments and taking some nutritional support and to my absolute astonishment and joy within a couple of weeks all of my symptoms were gone! I could actually eat some foods that I’d never been able to eat before.

Chiropractic Inspiration

These amazing results convinced me that I had to go to chiropractic school so that I could help others the way I’d been helped. Now in my 32nd year of practice, I still love to come to the office everyday to see what amazing things can happen when I remove the interference and allow the power that made the body, heal the body. At our Chickasha chiropractic office our great success with children wetting the bed has been very rewarding. Especially when we get calls or letters from parents saying their children got to go to a sleepover or camp for the first time.

Chiropractic & Continuing Education

I received my Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa and my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa.  I have always taken between 100-300 continuing education hours per year because I never want to stop learning how to utilize new breakthroughs and technologies to help my patients regain their health.

Monk Chiropractic ClinicSince graduating from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1977, I have taken hundreds of hours of continuing education every year. Classes have included:

Chiropractic Philosophy

Our practice philosophy is that every patient that comes to us deserves a thorough case history and examination to ascertain the underlying cause of their symptoms. This means infants to senior citizens. This serves two purposes, one it helps us find the cause and two, it helps us determine if Chiropractic care could be beneficial or if the patient would be better served by another health care discipline.

Having been in practice over 30 years, I feel doing what is best for each patient is our solemn obligation. Therefore, we routinely refer patients for medical consultations for both things outside the scope of our practice and to assist patients who need both chiropractic and medical care to achieve their health goals.

Dr. Monk and his Family

My family is spread out in age and geography. My stepson, Matt Bray is a decorated police officer in Upstate, New York. He lives in Fulton, NY with his wife Jennifer, a child advocate and their two daughters, Savannah, a Freshman in high school and Lily who is in the 5th grade. Both girls are voracious readers and Savvy plays basketball as well.

Josh works in Washington, D.C. for Morgan Stanley. He received his B.S. Degree at the University of Oklahoma and his MBA from Oklahoma City University. He’s a huge OU and Dallas Cowboy Fan.

Sarah Graduated from Norman North High School and is now a freshman at Oklahoma City Community College preparing for Nursing School.

Christian is a freshman at Mount Saint Mary’s High School. She like her nieces and is an avid reader. Christian has performed in Children’s Theatre and enjoys Drama Club and Tae Kwon Do.

As for me, I do spend a lot of my time out of the office reading and watching continuing education DVD’s. However since my background is an Iowa farm boy, I find it therapeutic to be outside especially if there is a tractor involved.

I try to follow my own advice. I take many nutritional supplements, eat organic food whenever possible, try to exercise regularly and receive regular chiropractic adjustments.

Thanks for visiting our site. My staff and I look forward to meeting you in person and learning how we may be of service to you. Give us a call so we can help you take the first step towards better health.
